Socially the clock had a more radical influence than any other machine, in that it was the means by which the regularization and regimentation of life necessary for an exploiting system of industry could best be attained.

“The Sonoran desert has become a remote outpost of death, a unique site of resistance and a study in how military strategies are effectively used to create profit while maintaining social control. The militarization of the US/Mexican border has caused a lot of suffering; thousands of people have died trying to cross since the mid-90’s. The exact number is not known, but according to the Coalición de Derechos Humanos, “it is estimated that the remains of more than 6,000 men, women and children have been recovered on the U.S.-México border.” Why these people died where they did does not make a lot of sense until one begins to trace the ow of capital.”

Phoenix, Arizona – like many places across America and the world – erupted in the summer of 2020 after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. Despite being the fifth largest city in the country, however, the scale of the eruption paled in comparison to many other cities, notably Minneapolis itself, Portland, and Atlanta, among others. Nonetheless, in a city that has not been considered a hot bed for radical action in a decade or more, the rupture that occurred in Phoenix was significant. It is with this understanding that I write the following account, not with the intent of creating a comprehensive analysis of the entire uprising in Phoenix, but rather to present the observations of one participant’s experiences in the hopes of adding to the discourse surrounding the nationwide uprising and its aftermath.

We’re all animals prescribed medication in the form of artificiality. Moral values, roles and “higher purposes” are socially constructed and assigned to us to reinforce social control. Individualist anarchy contradicts the homogeny of civilized order. Our animality is imprisoned by an institutional society that enforces its order through domesticated membership. Beneath all of the socially constructed identities, roles, conditioning and subservience we crave anarchy- acting and experiencing life out of bounds, above and beyond indoctrinated captivity. When we undress all of these assignments and refuse the medication of civilized order we are naked, wild and unique. Life opens up as a playground, and like within a self-aware dream in which we decide to have fun, it becomes a playground of limitless potential. Breaking windows is not a revolutionary act and neither is any other act if taken out of context and presented as an abstraction, ignoring the intentions and strategy of those who break the windows. The State or Capital or colonialism cannot be attacked as abstractions. They can only be attacked in their material forms, their social relations and their institutions.
